Pros

- The company has been able to secure deals with MSOs and other partners, so there is great opportunity ahead if the company can focus and execute. - Even with all of the work that needs to be done, most engineers work a manageable 40-50 hours per week. - Absolutely no way you can get fired. - The company is small enough that an individual engineer can have a large impact. - TiVo has a core group of smart and talented people that are great to work with. - Good work receives recognition. - Competition between engineers is discouraged. - Clear path for career advancement.

Cons

- Ridiculous number of managers for a company the size of TiVo. - You will work with some of the worst contractors in the world. - Company consistently overcommits to work and underestimates the effort. - No matching 401K. - Headquarters is located in a swamp. - The code base is large, complex and over-engineered in many places. - IT department is awful.

Pros

- Recognizable and generally well-regarded brand - Innovative product that is used and loved by many people - Strong focus on the user experience - Most everyone up to and including the CEO, is very approachable - Casual work environment (shorts and T-shirts, even flip flops, are OK) - Flexible hours - Midsize company (500+ employees) but still with a startup feel and mentality - TiVo's future hinges on the outcome of the Echostar lawsuit. If we win, the future is very bright. If we don't, the future looks pretty bleak. This can be viewed as either a pro or con.

Cons

- Software development is slow and lacking in quality (witness the many bugs reported in the recent Premiere launch). Not sure if this is due to a lack of resources, sub-par skills possessed by the existing resources, or some combination of the two. - Lack of accountability for mistakes and/or poor performance - Company is generally reactive instead of proactive (we better do X because so and so just did it) - Lack of any true visionary types to help chart TiVo's future course - Often suffers from "analysis paralysis" in which new courses of action are endlessly discussed - IT department is only interested in maintaining the status quo instead of moving things forward - we're still using XP and Office 2003! - Seems a bit top heavy with too many high-level people and not enough lower-level people doing real work - Suing Verizon and AT&T (and by extension Microsoft) before the Echostar case was definitively won seemed to be more hubris and chest-thumping than good business sense
