Pros

- leadership team is vetted, engaged, and ready to build the next 100 year company -if you work hard, ask for more responsibility, and coach others around you, your work will be reward and promotions will be given at record rate - easy to stand out if you can handle the growing pains of a fast paced startup

Cons

- there is a lot of work here - pay is below market, could lose top talent to other notable SaaS companies in BOS, NYC, and SF

Great company, HORRIBLE undermanagement

Pros

- Super successful company - All the resources you want

Cons

You know how they say: employees don’t leave their jobs, they leave their managers? From the get go expectations weren’t laid out at all: What I’ll be doing, what my day to day will look like, what is expected of me as a professional, what metrics I’m being measured against. Im a noob so I didn’t find this particularly concerning. Looking back now, I will think twice before taking a job if the job laid out in front of me isn’t clear. There’s a phrase they use here: “limited management oversight.” This seems to be a ploy to undermamage. As a manager, you need to measure performance actively. You can’t just be MIA the entire month or quarter and just show up at the end and tell me I didn’t do anything right.

This was a tough one to read, but I appreciate you sharing it. We need to hear this feedback in order to make the employee experience better. I’m sorry that you’ve felt undermanaged, with unclear expectations about performance in your role. Hypergrowth can definitely present challenges as the needs of the business continuously evolve, but that’s no excuse for how you’ve been feeling. I would love to connect and better understand your situation so that we can make it right. If you’re comfortable, I encourage you to reach out to me directly via email or through OfficeVibe. - Annie Drapeau, CPO

Poorly developed sales structure in a toxic environment

Pros

Toast is like any other technology company fighting to be cool. They provide free lunch. Give free apparel. Boast the beer fridge and have a snack wall. They try so hard to look cool.

Cons

Yet, they aren't. The interview process is a facade. The sales org is a boiler room. The culture is a scam. If you want to work for a company that values you, invests in you, and supports your growth, do not work here. The recruitment team will be hunting down college graduates that will fall for beer Fridays and a "casual" environment. But I advise, look at the bigger picture - they are so lax, without much else to offer. The sales org is disorganized and frazzled. More often than not, SAs begin to look for another job within the first 6 months. I would not recommend this position and in summary here is why: - Extremely inexperienced managers, >1 at the company, young, immature - Directors are aloof, and preach a strategy filled with foibles - SAs are given no time to improve or develop - fed to the wolves - Quantity over quality - Culture of Bros The sales org and structure inhibits collaboration within teams, and incentivizes associates to do their job without a true purpose, SA's are only a number.

This was tough feedback to receive, but we want to hear it, and are grateful for you sharing it. While we don’t want anyone at Toast to have the experience you did, we understand that Toast is in hypergrowth and it’s not always an easy journey. Your advice to management is a good reminder for us and really any hypergrowth business entering the next phase of growth. Your comment about Bro-culture is alarming and something we are digging into. At Toast, we’re one team - and our culture and values are built around being an inclusive and open environment. We’ll tolerate nothing less. With that said, we’re really proud of the development opportunities we’ve built within Toast. In 2019 we saw many of our Sales Associates grow and take their careers to the next level with clear paths to closing rep roles. We’ve also invested heavily in Q1 of this year in our SA Enablement & Management programs and will continue to do so. We’re working hard to get it right, and if you’re willing, I encourage you to reach out to me directly on LinkedIn and we can set up some time to connect. I appreciate your candor and am committed to making Toast a great place to work. - Aman Narang, President & Co-Founder
