Pros

Good benefits, especially retirement. Pay meets average for area which is unusual for a government employer. The County as whole pays good attention to their employees. They want to move forward with their processes as best as possible.

Cons

All of these comments refer only to my department that seems to still be in the 1900s. They also seem to condone dishonesty with respect to other employees, which bothers me. They want things to be as they have always been and not improve. It is inherent with the type of department in which I work. However, in some areas they actually excel compared to peer agencies.

Not bad for Government Work

Pros

If you are competent and hard working you will stand out from the crowd. As with many government employers, Travis County seems to attract and retain the mediocre.

Cons

If you are In Search of Excellence, this is probably not a good fit. The technology is not the latest, the people are not the best and brightest. As I was once told... This isn't like the private sector where results don't matter. Focus solely on the process. If you follow the established procedure and fail it wont be a problem because you performed all the correct steps in the right order. Deviate from the established procedure and even if you produce exceptional results, you can get in serious trouble.
