Pros

Financial advisors are not captive agents and were provided with 4 good levels of financial planning software. Advisors market to credit union Members and have the marketing support of not only CUNA but also their assigned credit union. Computers, phones, printers and parking are determined by the local credit union but may be negotiated in initial employment contract.

Cons

There is an inherent mismatch between a for-profit brokerage service and service to non-profit credit unions. I know of no CU that understands the financial planning business and therefore one is often faced with irreconcilable issues i.e. serving all Members, even those with no money to invest, while trying to support oneself by tiering services and qualifying Members. Advisors are often responsible for a large number of branches (5+) so much have outstanding time management skills and use the best technology/tools to support the challenges.

Pros

CUNA Mutual prides itself on being innovative, and recognizes that change is the only constant. Most of their technologies are up-and-coming. They also were servicing credit unions exclusively but then realized that at the rate credit unions are closing, they need to branch out. They have since diversified into different non-credit union markets.

Cons

Some technologies are seriously out-dated, silo-mentality, favoritism

Pros

Work-life balance - rarely work more than 40 hours a week and many people arrange their schedules to go to kids sports events, etc. Mostly it's better than being unemployed.

Cons

Poor leadership, both the caliber of their work and their treatment of employees under them. Upper level management seems to view lower levels as if they are interchangeable and have few skills. Worst opportunities for career development and advancement and worst organization of the major organizations I've worked for.
