Great growth potential!

Pros

I started at the firm as an almost entry level associate. Within a year, I was managing my own case load, and within 3 years, I was promoted to Senior Associate. I was promoted to Partner just a little over a year later, less than 7 years after I started practicing. Along the way, I have had access to great mentors who have cared about my career progression and development as an attorney and litigator. I have been guided by some of the best lawyers in our field. While the firm provides oversight to make sure all attorneys stay on track with cases, I was given considerable autonomy to make strategic decision on my cases. It is an excellent place to grow and develop!

Cons

Being a litigator is tough and is a lot of work. Clients can be demanding and Tully Rinckey has very high standards. However, that's what makes its attorneys the best they can be.

You'll get good experience and work with some genuinely nice people. The benefits are reasonable.

Cons

Where to start? They overwork everyone--you can tell the attorneys are stressed out all the time and this stress gets transferred to support staff. In particular, the staff members that actually know what they're doing get overburdened and micromanaged. Yet they will let some attorneys (generally white, cis, men) get away with murder and leave everyone else to clean up the mess. They pay peanuts and give frustratingly small raises ("merit increases") that don't even come close to covering increased cost of living. Meanwhile, they require you to hound clients for money because they allow certain partners to pad their billing and deplete retainer funds. Take note that most of the positive reviews are from people who've been with the firm for a year or so and haven't had the chance to burn out (and who have likely been pressured into posting a review). Or they're from the attorneys who are benefitting from the favoritism. Re: favoritism, the founders promote based on whoever they sniff out as a sycophant, not based on ability. Alternatively, they hire people very young, brainwash them, and promote them once they've fully bought into the BS. Also note that Mr. Tully and Mr. Rinckey have both been subject to a DC Bar investigation, and currently it's recommended that they be suspended for 90 days each for ethical violations.

As a mid-sized national law firm, Tully Rinckey’s average billable hour requirement of 38 hours per week, and 1786 hours per year is below average when compared to other firms throughout the United States, many of which require a 2,200-hour annual billing requirement. Currently, we offer attorneys billable hour credit for paid time off, CLE participation, and our attorneys are always encouraged to speak with their managing partner or human resources department if they are approaching burnout. We explain these requirements in depth during our interview and hiring process so nobody is surprised by our key performance indicators. Tully Rinckey also promotes work life balance, including having attorneys who have converted to part-time or Of Counsel status to allow them to balance the needs of their personal and professional life. For firms our size and with our practice area depth, we offer above average salaries based on in depth market research and industry data, along with limitless growth potential for attorneys. We routinely promote attorneys throughout the year who have gone above and beyond for the firm based on the goals and objectives established when a new attorney has started with Tully Rinckey. Over the past several years, we have had many attorneys climb the ranks from law clerk up to practice chair, managing partner, equity partner, and our current CEO started with us as a law clerk. Attorneys truly are able to create their own destiny at Tully Rinckey and we are sorry to hear that this was not your experience. Currently, the firm has over 70 attorneys firmwide, and the firm encourages diversity at every level. In addition to our attorney talent, we have over 70 well trained support staff in multiple offices, many of whom have been with the firm for over a decade, whom we empower, promote, and train as part of our day-to-day operations at Tully Rinckey as we continue to thrive and grow the firm.
