Union job, the good and the bad

Pros

Great benefits & high pay!!! UCLA has been working very hard on patient satisfaction, which in turn helps employee satisfaction. I do really love working for a company that puts the patients first.

Cons

If you are a hard worker it can be very hard for you to work in this union environment. I am tired of co-workers that do not care about the patients and do very little work. I am burned out carrying a majority of the workload and seeing senior employees sit back and do nothing, and make more money!!!!!! I also find it hard to move up, not many opportunities.

Pros

UCLA is a fantastic place to land long-term if you can get into the right department with the right people. If you don't end up in a positive career environment, lateral and upward transfers within the organization are quite easy. Be warned though that a bad boss can interfere, so where you first get into the door matters. Healthcare benefits are fantastic and as a state employee, paid holidays are plenty. I wouldn't bet on the pension, but they will talk about it like nothing could ever go wrong with it even though it's clearly not economically viable.

Cons

Inconsistent culture across organization. Within finance department, there is rampant racial/gender discrimination, poor management and leadership accountability, management breaking UCLA policy and state law, and a mentality of years employed over merit

Pros

Good benefits A job for life if that's all you want

Cons

Demeaning leadership creates miserable working conditions 90% turnover rate in past year in my research program No work/life balance Sets employees up for failure by spreading them too thin, giving them no admin support, and "motivating" them through coercion Disorganized and unfocused management - no training or real orientation for managers or staff and consequently no accountability for consistent or clear leadership or roles No recognition for staff Culture of fear and pressure - staff repeatedly humiliated in front of other staff at team meetings
