Pros

UCLA has an upbeat, optimistic atmosphere. The work you do supports important advancements in science, culture and the arts. Management is usually concerned with employee well being. UCLA has opportunities is almost every field and likes to promote people from within, making it easy to start a job and change concentration or job type.

Cons

Pay is lower than in industry positions, Seniority not merit determines many issues. State labor laws and unions regulations can make many aspects of the job more cumbersome. Work hours might be limited, overtime can be limited or even prohibited. Union strikes happen once every couple years.

Pros

Great university and great facilities. A lot of great extra benefits come with working for UCLA. Discount to membership to the wooden center gym which is right on campus is a plus. Excellent job security, provided that you do your job of course.

Cons

Budget cuts just effected employees' phone plans -- text messaging were canceled and we have to pay partly for our phone.
