Pros

many opportunities to go elsewhere within the system. the ability to obtain many opinions from doctors throughout the system. easy to find jobs, basically on any unit because nurses are so understaffed. there are many classess available for continuing education, upmc shadyside is very up-to-date with computers (meaning computer charting) making life a little easier as a nurse,. shadyside hospital is a teaching hopsital so it makes it nice working with interns and residents because they are still learning so they do not speak down the nurses and respect our opinions (normally)

Cons

poor hourly rates. there are barely any hospitals to compete with. since upmc shadyside is a teaching hospital, working with interns and residents can be more work in itself. always having to second guess their orders. in an emergency it can be difficult because they dont always know what to do. Inturn nurses work ten times harder causing dissatisfaction hence understaffing and nurse turnovers. upmc does not give sign on bonuses anymore, lack of equipment on units avaliable such as pulse ox's, bp cuffs, broken medication carts, and ....

Pros

Benefits, Yearly raises, Nursing committees, Educaction oppurtunities, changes in the hospital workings are well communicated, most unit managers are easy to work for & try to work with personal obligsations ie school when it comes to schedules

Cons

Hours that are scheduled, unable to not have a rotating shift unless it is an off shift, lack of respect for nursing in general, pay, it is very hard to advance becuase there are so many nurses for so few postions, the atmosphere is very "who you know" versus "what you know", there isn't enough recognition for good work, punishment for to many calloffs hours that do not take into consideration that many nurses work 12 hour shfts and have children, no assistance with daycare or sick child care so work doesn't have to be missed

Pros

I work outpatient so it is M-F no weekends, holidays or call.

Cons

UPMC does not care about their employees. It is all about money, spread sheets and they higher ups making decisions on things they have never done before and are never on the floor seeing what’s actually happening.
