Pros

Support the country and the Soldiers Stable employment Great Benefits

Cons

Even as an engineer you are usually looking at others peoples' work and evaluating it, not doing your own. Flexibility is highly dependent on immediate management - vacation is easy to approve, travel can be a pain. There can be a lot of bureaucracy - but it is the government, what did you expect?

Pros

Pay has advanced significantly over my career and is now comparable to similar positions in the civilian world. The pay off for the frequent moves and deployments is a 50% retirement check at 20 yrs which goes up 2.5% for each additional year of service. Unparalleled opportunity to live and work in foreign countries (I've lived in 4). Easy to score scholarships to pay for college which requires participation in ROTC and subsequent commisioning at a Lieutenant with a 4-6 service commitment.

Cons

Negatives include regimented promotion system with limited opportunity to advance faster on your own merits (restricted to 5-8% of the population), dangerous occupation, and job locations is the U.S. can be be in less than ideal locations.

Pros

A sense of Duty should be paramount. For young people the pay, vacation time, and medical benefits are almost unbeatable. The tuition assistance can change the entire way one plans thier future in a positive way, when they may not have thought they would have the opportunity to further thier education. Travel and exposure to many cultures is also another one.

Cons

Long deployments are the main drawback
