Pros

Flexible schedule... sometimes. Good pay... in some positions. High priority put on employee safety, especially in field. If local census office managers communicate with each other, office can be a wonderful place to work. If they don't, it can be hell.

Cons

Regional management unhelpful, blame you for their errors. Directions change at a moment's notice, rendering weeks of preparation irrelevant. Unusually harsh disciplinary procedures: if you make an error in calculation on your timesheet, you are terminated immediately and are never allowed to work in any government position for the rest of your life. I had to terminate one of my best employees for this reason--she'd made an addition error that showed her working 15 minutes extra one week, and she was terminated by the following Monday.

Pros

The best part of the job was meeting and befriending people from all backgrounds. Annual and sick leave time benefits were decent. Learned a lot in a short period of time.

Cons

There was a crabs in a barrel type mentality that was so unnecessary. Upper management had a hurry up and wait mentality that required lower level staff to repeat work and correct mistakes. People were laid-off at the drop of a dime. Yes, we signed paperwork that stated that we could be laid off at any time. But sometimes, managers had information about layoffs and refused to give employees a heads up. Some employees at the Regional census center were very rude. Excuse me, most of you are temporary also.
