Pros

Without a doubt the money and the benefits, especially if you are an officer. I made great money and I got to travel frequently.

Cons

Long hours. Be prepared to literally become government property. The Navy literally takes over your life because they can. I mean, for the money they pay you and the stuff they give you (food, housing, healthcare) they will extract it from you in the form of time. As in your time is at their beck and call. But if you are the kind of person that values a steady job (especially in this economy) then the Navy is as steady as she gets.

Pros

Decent pay, great work-life balance, generally good colleagues, and a purpose-driven life. The training and travel opportunities are often unique and interesting, as well. Good ideas and good work are rewarded and recognized - if you know how to work your way through the politics and bureaucracy. If you have a terrible boss or work with slow or generally awful people, there is the great comfort that they'll likely transfer to another job in a faraway location within a few months.

Cons

Culture can be very rigid, promotion potential as a civilian is limited, and the bureaucracy can be infuriating. Working for the Navy at the Pentagon can be particularly frustrating, especially when faced with mid-level officers and civilians that respect rank more than merit.

Pros

You get a chance to see the world. You forge great relationships with people from all parts of the world. You become more disciplined.. For me the Navy really helped me believe in myself, and be proud of what I do, and appreciate everything more. The G.I. Bill is also very important, it provides a future help for you, if you decide that you dont want to make a career out of the Navy.

Cons

Being out to sea is very hard on your person/family affairs. I have seen many families fall apart, for what ever the reason... I never really feel like im "home" because everything is always temporary.
