Pros

- Kind, warm and generous colleagues - Gorgeous campus, nice dining halls, gyms, covered parking etc. - Competitive benefits package - Up to 8% 401k matching w/an addtl 4-8% kicker - The executive culture of 'managing-up' means individual contributors and middle managers aren't supervised - Family friendly, heaps of schedule flexibility - Extraordinary commitment to veterans, LGB and employees w/disabilities - Zero tolerance for workplace harassment, hazing etc. - Extremely stable employer, few layoffs or workforce reductions - USAA is highly regarded in San Antonio and its employees are deeply respected

Cons

- San Antonio is an extremely difficult place for highly educated, credentialed or ambitious spouses to have independent careers (USAA pays the highest salaries in SAT so unless your spouse works there too expect a deep paycut relative to where you moved from) - Bonus awards are steadily declining - The military market it serves is shrinking - The IT Dept isn’t held accountable for its action/inaction and disempowers lines of business (that’s why IT is consistently a top-rated place to work, even though it actively interferes with business improvement processes) - Many executives have alarmingly weak academic and professional backgrounds. It is increasingly led by castoffs from larger financial institutions who couldn’t hack it in NY, Chicago, SF, LA etc. and got trapped in SAT

Pros

Remote work accommodation during COVID

Cons

The forced RTO may be in violation of state and Federal laws regarding work from home accommodations. Those of us who have a documented disability are protected under the EOC, provided we could do our job remotely (we did), and performed our job functions satisfactorily (individual metrics improved in many cases). The company can not force you to return to the office if you meet the above criteria, they must accommodate you. This includes physical and mental health related disabilities. Just in this forum alone, there are many individuals who left due to the toxic environment and extreme mental health issues caused by the stress of this job. The EOC is going to start cracking down on companies who allowed WFH during COVID, and then abruptly revoked the accommodation. It is not acceptable for the company to say that it is a management decision that everyone return to the office and deny remote opportunities across the board. Each request for remote work must be reviewed individually on its own merit, which the company did not do. They got around a lot of the red tape by claiming that they were making the positions “hybrid “ which meant 80% in the office - all so management could continue their extreme micromanaging of employees.

Pros

Vision, Mission, Members, Gorgeous facility, Education benefit, food access, gym and other Perks on campus, respectful environment, flex Schedules after a year, 401K, great job for retirees or those who do not care about promoting. Diverse and hires Veterans, Second chance employer in some cases. Paid training and college credits.

Cons

Pay is low, medical benefits are not great, coworkers lack of critical thinking skills causes issues, lack of qualified employee pool for this pay level job, lots of calls, hard to get promoted if you are younger. This job is hard for the low money it pays and requires higher level thinking abilities. This is severe and lacking in our country today, and especially in AZ, which has a lowly educated state populace. I left because I hated the job, moved out of state, and got another job paying better. I was sad since I loved the company. I just hated the job. Maybe other opportunities. This work is not for everyone.
