Pros

The benefits are very good.

Cons

Salary of former union nurses is mind-blowing. Salary for in-coming nurses is good, but not what it was. Now the pay raises are minimal and there are significant caps on the max salary per hour. Like a lot of nursing now, documentation and cya trump actual patient care.

Pros

Great advancement and educational opportunities for nurses. Academic environment. Benefits are better than most private companies. Employees can work part time and still receive full time benefits. Extended maternity leaves possible.

Cons

Benefits cost has gone up significantly in the last 5 years. Parking is expensive and there is not enough space in the close lots for all employees to park within walking distance. Inpatient units are very busy and frequently lack adequate staffing for safe patient care and breaks for staff. It is very difficult for breastfeeding mothers working on inpatient units to drink enough water and take breaks to pump. There are not enough lactation rooms and staff either have to wait for a room to open up or go to another room that is a 10-15 minute round trip walk from their unit which uses up a significant amount of the paid pumping time allowed. Morale is low on some units.

Pros

I have worked at UW Health for 10+ years in various roles. There is lots of opportunity to change jobs, develop internally and promote into clinical or non-clinical jobs. Pay and benefits are good, along with a flexible schedule.

Cons

Change in the healthcare industry is continuous - need to be flexible with it or it can become overwhelming.
