Pros

Incredibly talented and motivated group of people who work well together and help each other succeed. Best idea wins culture. Values-driven, mission-driven business. People develop their own career paths and are encouraged to change roles within the org, if another area of career exploration interests them. Diversity of opinions and approaches to work encouraged, not just accepted.

Cons

Location is on public transportation, but in a relatively-industrial, distant Brooklyn neighborhood. Can be a schelp to get from work to after-work events elsewhere in Brooklyn or the city. Limited food options, so many bring own lunch to work. Strong seasonal spike in business can create very challenging 4Q work experience for some.

Pros

Upper level management makes a huge effort to make all employees feel like important parts of the team; monthly company-wide lunches to report info, news and updates; intelligent, committed co-workers, great sample sales

Cons

During my time there, a director was sometimes stretched too thin, affecting their ability to effectively manage team members and at times creating a tense environment

Great Mission, But Leadership Changes Were a Dealbreaker

Pros

Uncommon Goods is a company with a truly special mission—creating products that make a positive impact and bringing creativity into everyday life. The culture was initially warm and collaborative, and I really enjoyed being part of a team that cared about our work. There was a strong sense of purpose, and the people were passionate and kind. For a while, it felt like a place where I could thrive. However, in the fall of 2024, there was a shift in leadership that significantly changed the work environment. Initially, there was optimism about the new direction, but over time, the leadership approach led to challenges. Increased oversight, inconsistent project direction, and a lack of trust in team members' expertise created confusion and frustration. What had once been a supportive and collaborative environment became more rigid and stressful. Morale declined, and many team members began leaving. While some attributed this to the company’s updated return-to-office policy, others—myself included—felt that the leadership changes played a much larger role. The workplace became less supportive, and I no longer felt the same sense of trust and respect that initially made Uncommon Goods such a great place to work. I still respect the company’s mission and the talented individuals who work there, but I hope leadership takes employee feedback seriously and works to rebuild a culture of trust and collaboration.
