Pros

Very stable company and a PENSION. Probably one of the best companies to work for if you intend to settle down and have a family. Lots of room to grow, as many in the railroad industry are retiring.

Cons

Raises, bonuses, and promotions are too political. Depending on the department, you may do more work than someone else, but get a much lower raise and bonus. If you are thinking about applying in the IT department, don't do it. Union Pacific sees any IT employee as a second class citizen to their other departments.

Pros

Good pay and benefits. You live pretty independently seldom having any interaction with management. We are all union employees and have decent job protection which is very important out here.

Cons

Management is horrible (six sigma mngt system) from the top down. Without job protection, no one would be here more than 10yrs. Away from home a lot, no set schedule. Staying awake may be the most important and most difficult part of being a road conductor. Life may suck until you get some seniority.
