Pros

Benefits, and depending on the job, the pay

Cons

Lifestyle, on on call always, and company attitude towards employees. The Union ain't worth a damn either. They get paid to render a service and do not even perform it. They take money from new employees when they should not be. Managers and higher ups are very snake like and are never around when you need then. You have to call them numerous times, leave messages and they still do not return your call. Then when you finally get ahold of them, they completely mess everything up. The entire railroad is a mess and is full of uneducated, disgruntled, hypocrites (yard masters). Everyone has an attitude all the time and complains all while being lazy. It's dog eat dog out there. The crews that transport across the country are the ones putting the money in the company's pocket but are always furloughed whenever the company feels like it. They act like they are so military friendly and hire veterans but furlough them the moment they finish training. Union Pacific is fake and choses a penny over an employee and their family. Training is minimal and you are thrown out there to work with no idea what's going on and with no protection from the union. They are all about safety but only because they (the company) doesn't want to look bad by having injuries at work. This would actually be a great company to work for if they just figured out a better way to schedule and care appreciation for their employees. You will get screwed any chance the company gets. Managers are always out to get you. An employee got disciplined once because he laid off due to his mother passing away. A manager or higher up had the individual come in before his flight to his mothers funeral to give him his disciplinary paperwork. Are you kidding me? They are ruthless and have no sympathy, especially when ones family member passes away. True character of a billion dollar company. Half the time managers have never even worked on a train. Corporate people as well, and they sit behind their desk and write ridiculous rules and regulations that are interpreted a million different ways.

Pros

The U.P. spin machine is REALLY impressive, and with the money they're pumping into it, it should be.

Cons

The worst aspects of Union Pacific are the SALE point reasons the Recruiters use to sell you on them: pay, benefits, "network". You get lied to about your pay while in training; they send you a list of pay rates when they are courting you but forget to tell you it's only 75% of that?! Yup. IF the UTU/Smart Reps MIGHT tell you about Claims or how to file them, they are refused for travel, mileage, meals, and lodging while in training. Work Location; your Hire location will more than likely have NOTHING to do with where you train OR eventually WORK!? Yup. Training program; this is the strangest part of the whole big picture of LEARNing what to do on the RailRoad-everyone sees it as a program "set up for failure". Conductors and Switchers being hired today are being replaced when currently in training FITs are sent back to their original positions, hence the title here of "Limited Term/ Temporary teams"; all the new hires today are doing is covering the vacant jobs of people in training, until they RETURN from training, then you're out of a job. Your training files will be falsified, FTX records ARE FALSIFIED, and they are hunting down the Seniority employees using New Hires to testify against them for a push out. Sounds attractive, right?
