Pros

Employee Stock Options and 401K savings plans

Cons

You are not treated with any respect. You are expected to meet monthly performance metrics with NO excuses for your numbers to drop. I worked for Optum for 5 1/2 years . During that time I was assigned to a national account. There are supposed to be 7 nurses assigned to this account. Over 5/1/2 years I worked with 22 different peers that came and left and I had 7 supervisors as well. The last manager was only there for two months and during that time put me on a final warning if I did not meet the minimum Metrics for the second quarter. I met the requirements but was terminated anyway (NOT for poor performance, but "other" as stated on my separation notice. Many employees were bullied by management and ruled with scare tactics. This often lead employees to employ unethical tactics to meet the impossible metrics set before them.

Pros

Counseling employees of many large tech companies in the bay area regarding mental health and wellness issues, whose employers have chosen UHG OPTUM (formerly known as United Behavioral Health) to be there EAP vendor.

Cons

Business Intelligence Analytics inappropriately tweaks parameters of automated algorithms and formulas up and down to deny benefits to its own employees, contracted providers and customers in order to maximize united health group's CEO's & board of directors profits. You don't get rewarded for high performance. The metrics are always being tweaked to do more with less time. Poor ergonomics set up. Under market value wages. The CEO decided to increase the usual and customary fees of physicians after a major law suit with Ingenix now known as Optum insight. He has not allowed psychologists and masters level clinicians to adjust the usual and customary rate. When our clients wants to see clinician face to face, most providers in the network who list accepting EAP in the UHG data bases, actually turn EAP members away because of the low compensation rate.

Pros

Co-workers are professional and make work seem fun. The theory behind what UHG is doing sounds good (helping people live healthier lives). It is nice to meet people that live around you and provide health education to members in the community. Overall, low level medical decision making skills and low level medical legal liability. Good benefits but pay is lacking.

Cons

Many of us housecalls NP practitioners were lured in with promised that were not kept (no raises, no bonuses and the pay structure is below national average). Then the schedules were unreasonable causing us to work longer and longer days, sometimes well over what we were scheduled to work and driving many miles daily. PTO is a use it or lose it "grant" (not benefit) so if/when one leaves the company, they don't pay out on the last check. Some of the check list for physical exam and testing during the housecalls visit is not medical evidence based (monofiiament screen on everyone).
