Pros

Okay pay. Three 12 hour shifts a week

Cons

Do not work for VEG. The company is basically a cult. They expect you to conform to their beliefs and put work above everything else. Higher ups and local management is extremely disconnected and unempathetic. They charge outrageous prices that rival top-notch specialty hospitals. The quality of care provided does not justify their pricing. The company is expanding too fast for their own good. At the beginning of my two years, they at least tried to act like they cared. Everyone in the company gives big talk of great things but never followed through.

Pros

- more lax environment- no need to pretend to keep busy with meaningless tasks during downtime - excellent doctors - a few excellent nurses, some more mediocre but quality enough - user friendly software - honest about referrals; doctors will not admit a case/refer to specialty hospital or case is too critical / if unable to allot equivalent level of patient care

Cons

- treats clients as “customers”. An awful mindset especially in a post covid world. medicine does comes before reviews - messy messy messy onboarding & management. I had to harass them to give me a start date and proper access to necessary accounts such as an email login, clock in/out account, etc. - inventory was consistently lacking in necessary materials that varied week by week- some days no fluid bags except liter sized, some weeks no insulin syringes. Assistants would be reprimanded for not stocking meanwhile we didn’t even have said materials. - no real training or structure. I came with experience, but consistently noticed green assistants struggling with basic restraint, procedure set up, etc. - lax environment led to workload disparities. Some nurses would want to do bare minimum / just nurse work and have assistants do everything else like cleaning/meds/ discharge. Green assistants would see lax environment and not keep up with basic tasks like keeping laundry going, stocking etc. bc there was no real training - inconsistent staffing. lots of travel techs in & out so no opportunity for real team buildings / building a rapport, on top of regular veterinary turnover

Pros

Good benefits and work perks, cool new office being built. Dog friendly.

Cons

They don’t seem to actually care about animals, just about money. Everyone that works there seems tired and they definitely do not care about diversity. They only hired a few people of color after many people already complained, not because it was an initiative. The new CPO is a piece of work, I liked working at VEG before she came along and changed a lot of the company culture and made hires that fit more to her culture than the companies, and got rid of people she simply didn’t like or didn’t want to deal with. Also this company is truly the definition of “at will” employment because they will decide to let you go and expect you done and out in the next hour with no warnings

VEG ER for Pets Response

Hi there! We totally understand how upsetting it is to be let go, especially during this difficult time. However, VEG has a leadership academy program that trains our leaders on how to properly give feedback and communicate when an employee isn't performing well. Communication is always provided prior to the termination of any employee because documentation of the employee's performance is needed as per HR requirements. We are also aware of the burn out of everyone in our industry, including in our hospitals, and have put in place multiple activities to show our appreciation for the hard work of everyone that works at VEG. We have put together a DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) team as well, that focuses exclusively on making sure we continue to commit to our goal of hiring amazing people from all races, cultures, sexual preferences and more. If there are any specific issues you encountered during your time at VEG, please contact us at hr@veg.vet and we will do everything in our power to assist you. Good luck on your future endeavors!
