Great Projects, Difficult Working Environment

Pros

Overall, many large, complex and interesting projects to collaborate on creating a dynamic and challenging work environment. The professional talent level is exceptional, at all levels. Benefits are typically better than peer firms and salaries are competitive.

Cons

Typically there is a substantial imbalance for work/ personal time due to the pressure for meeting billability targets, pushed mainly on staff and project managers. Too much responsibility shifted to PM's without the support of management. Often described as a pressure cooker environment, with few rewards, especially during this recent declining economy. Politics and self-serving actions are way too prevalent for a healthy firm. Accountability is a joke for senior managers and undermines many deserving professionals. The generational company ideals and core values all got lost during these recent difficult times....which may ultimately define the type of firm VHB really is.

Pros

Good diversity of projects; top notch graphics and IT department; great employee benefits; generally, all offices provide nice working space with amenities. Good place to work as long as there is a thriving economy.

Cons

Unreasonably high billibility targets for most employess; expect marketing to be done on your own time; tendancy to advance people into positions not well suited for them; panic stricken when economy tanked and a lot people were laid off including long time employees and company stock holders. The "land development" practice appears to be the favored child while the transportation and environmental practices are the red headed stepchildren.

Relationships, working on teams to complete projects. Flexible when it comes to work life balance. Company goals are clear and inspiring.

Cons

lack of collaborations between departments. projects can be repetitive. Tight deadlines and lack of resources to complete projects is frustrating.
