      Cool technology but wish it were still a startup

      Pros

      Coolest technology I've ever worked with. Some very smart people. Very successful company. Relatively pleasant social environment. Well development test methodology/framework. Great resume builder. Easy to find people to go out to lunch with and have a great conversation.

      Cons

      Bloated bureaucracy. Arrogant middle management and senior engineers. Lack of career growth opportunities for QA engineers (absolutely no chance of switching from QA to Dev., no matter how competent). Protracted and stifling SW development process. Antagonistic relationship between QA and Dev. Poorly managed growth from EMC buyout onwards. Group-think.

      Pros

      the products this company creates are the future. at this time this is one of the few places where you can still come in and see a direct impact. while the place is getting bigger you still have the opportunity to directly impact that growth

      Cons

      There are no real downsides here, but the main risk VMware has exposed it self to is: the company has growing fast and in the process, the standards have dropped. too many "not my job" and "old company" type people have slipped in. as these "C" grade people get in they hire "C" and "D" level staff, not the "A" level that can build a company. the opportunity to slip folks in under the radar will destroy these place. We don't want to wake up and find we are just another ISV?
