Pros

autonomy, brand (although on the decline), 401k match, work with good people

Cons

Leadership is either out of touch because they have been there forever or they are young and inexperienced. Vanguard’s value was low cost and the competition has caught up. The offer to clients and advisors is far behind our competition. As an employee you will be overworked and underpaid, vanguard talks about total compensation which is their way to pay you less money by including what they pay of your insurance premium into your compensation package (vanguard is paying less and less year over year by the way)

Pros

-Financial Industry with a moderate amount of useful skills- -Lots of great personal knowledge (when in the right departments)- -Strong investment philosophy that has stood the test of time and the rest of the industry is starting to see the light- -High Job Security- -Solid retirement benefits 4% match after 1 year fully vested, 10% employer contribution with 2-6 year annual 20% vest- -Recent Graduate environment- -Great people on your personal teams- -Your manager (TL) will make/break your experience, thankfully I have been lucky- -Have the opportunity to really help people out with the right situation, but you being willing to put the client before your own metrics- -Employee feedback has improved since NWOW

Cons

-EXTREMELY metrics-driven, as someone who truly wants to help clients and enjoys speaking with clients (when they are not complaining which is ~10%, the other 90% are great) the metrics are extremely constraining on how much you can do for clients. There is minimal to no emphasis on actually making a difference in someone's financial future (at least for self-managed clients), and it is all about having yours 'numbers' meet expectations, and NWOW has only made it worse. - -Cross-Department communication is non-existent, changes will occasionally be communicated with you, it is primarily up to you to notice by email (which you are granted no time to check and your metrics are extremely restrictive to allow for time)- -Calls are nearly always back to back, not getting a call the second you hit "auto in" will be shocking if you are ever lucky enough to experience this- -Promotions are fairly sparse and candidates chosen are largely based on an over-emphasized 30 minute interview with 3-4 questions requiring "star" format answers, rather than job performance, talent level, qualifications, and ambition- -Outdated Systems-

Pros

Benefits are good. Work-life balance is not great but not awful. There are a lot of opportunities to move within the company. This would be a great company to retire in.

Cons

Not a nurturing environment for young people. Managers are quick to write people off and unwilling to truly support new hires. Managers' favorites are given exciting projects, whereas those who had a slower start never recover. Code is extremely antiquated, and suggestions for widespread code updates are promptly squashed. I have not once felt appreciated or supported, despite my best efforts to make up for having a slower start. Some managers are very obvious about who their favorites are and even seem to have some racial bias. Upper management is disengaged and uninvolved in their direct reports. Business clients come first, even if it's at the detriment of developers. IT salaries are on the low end, compared to the rest of the industry. To me, Vanguard's culture felt like a facade meant to hide outdated coding practices, negligent management and a company that is--pardon my harshness--only ideal for people who plan to die here. If you are a young professional who has been floundering or considering leaving Vanguard, please take this as your sign to leave. I wanted to love Vanguard, but I had a very unpleasant experience. I ignored many signs that I should leave, thinking I could make it work. I do not regret my slow start nor my occasional mistakes, but I do regret not leaving sooner.
