Pros

Getting to work with a lot of very smart, motivated people. Verily has so many interesting projects across different areas of healthcare/life sciences, and I've found it really interesting to learn about other product areas and initiatives outside my immediate team. The senior leadership team recently put on Verily's first "Strategy Week" where they had many all-company sessions with different leaders laying out their vision and plans for the future -- that transparency was great, and it was really cool to hear from the senior leadership about their personal motivations for getting involved in this work. I've had good work-life balance so far in my role -- from what I understand, lots of the bad reviews about work-life balance here came from the teams who spun up COVID-related projects in the early days of the pandemic, which definitely could have been handled better, but isn't representative of the company as a whole.

Cons

Verily is growing very rapidly right now, which naturally comes with some growing pains. Verily is also in an interesting stage as it tries to become more independent from Google, which involves lots of migrations off of Google-internal tools and infrastructure.

Pros

- Union - Potential for impact if leadership can execute on their promises - Some teams work on interesting problems - If you can make time, a lot of resources to learn internally - Colleagues with experience and passion for driving impact

Cons

- Company's engineering is slow - Startup churn without startup benefits (slow to promote, etc) - Many engineers are skeptical of embracing open source technology - Doesn't pay top of market (levels.fyi) - Leadership doesn't respond to concerns sincerely - Stagnated engineering skill development, talented folks leave - Hiring struggles with inclusivity - Too busy catching up to innovate

Pros

- Super smart group of people, all of whom are truly committed to improving healthcare. - Fantastic Alphabet benefits / perks / stability / infrastructure. - Incredible office space (free food, amenities, etc.) shared with Google - It's a small company (less than 2k employees), so everyone can make a big impact.

Cons

- Priorities change quickly - Trying to do too many different things, but healthcare is complicated. Sometime it makes sense to try a bunch of things and then pick some winners. Verily is at the picking winners stage now.
