Pros

We are paid time and a half for working on Sunday. There are six paid holidays yearly. It is cleaner and safer than other department stores. The hours are not hyper-extended at the Christmas holiday season.

Cons

The demands and expectations on sales associates and department managers are ridiculously high. Dept. managers rarely last beyond five years, because Von Maur would rather replace them with a different person at lower pay, than keep them on. There are too many rules, all of which are strictly enforced, usually by a written disciplinary or sudden termination. There is a serious lack of information sharing with associates. The current store manager is terribly harsh and cold. " The customer is always right " policy applies even when it's completely inappropriate. It's virtually impossible to get a pay raise, or if you do it's tiny. Work reviews are skewed so that any negatives they find are given more weight than the positives done by the employee.

Pros

Nice benefits. 401k offered. Paid vacation and sick time is fair. wonderful co workers. Holidays off with pay. Time and a half on sundays. Will sometimes open early but never stays open late. Promotes from within.

Cons

Will not take suggestions or feedback from employees. They support the customer over the associate in every instance. Upper management gets younger and younger and not enough time with the company. Can be overly strict. Employees walk on eggshells. Sales goals can be too high. There is no return policy. Customers return things obviously worn, sometimes a year later. This goes against associates sales goal for some reason and creates high stress levels. New electronic scheduling system (tess) makes no sense. It is scheduling 9 and 10 hour shifts, sometimes 8 and 9 days in a row. It schedules lunches too, sometimes an hour after punching or 6 hours after punching. It has sadly created unhappy, exhausted employees who no longer go the extra mile for the company. A shift is now like doing time.

Pros

Weekly recognition, commission on top of great hourly rate.

Cons

There are pro's and con's of every company, so some of the smaller things that I didn't like, aren't worth mentioning. The biggest problem I have is that it is QUITE obvious you can be too old to work at VM, at least above a certain level.
