Pros

Beautiful store, pay not bad, no holidays and time in a half for Sundays!

Cons

Upper management is under 23, single white females with NO retail experience!!! It's almost as if corp. wants Stedford wives that they can mold! (To fit into their cult) They talk down to you as if your special needs, even though you have 20 years retail experience. They are not open to any ideas, suggestions or your opinion at all. When you do try to give your opinion, they look at you like a deer in the head lights. CLUELESS!!!! Whatever you do don't be one min late or you'll get canned! Well unless they like you and your a top sales producer in your department. During my time at Von Maur I saw so many awesome people get let go or just quit, cause they couldn't take it. Management could careless, everyone is replaceable. Our floor manager had Zero people skills, but that's what to expect from a dingbat 22-year-old! Again that's what Von Maur wants! God forbid you actually have intelligent people with retail experience, HR experience and professionalism.

Pros

20% Discount Really good exercise if you work in the shoe department

Cons

Intense dread when driving to work Fear of being let go on a daily basis Lack of training Dress code. As a department manager, Management didn't like my style of leading (I'm a former Marine, so I lead from the front and protected my people in my department) Management fired THREE of my associates without even consulting with me first. Floor managers who feel threatened will "take out the competition" rather than lead Living in constant fear of losing your job. You will get written up on bogus information if management has it out for you. Once you are "labeled" in Von Maur, that was your only shot. If you fail at an interview in a certain position, they will never consider you again. No training--they just throw you out on the floor and it's sink or swim If you are a veteran and request veteran's day off, they give you A LOT of grief for it and make you feel like you're letting everyone down No drinking water on the sales floor. Listening to the same piano music over and over again Advice to employees who feel beat down: You can do so much better elsewhere. You don't have to be treated like this.

Pros

-Ability to grow quickly right out of college -Experience traveling to large markets like NYC, LA, ATL -Built strong vendor relationships -Gain entrepreneurial skills -Made great friends at the buyer level -Able to complete work in a 8:30am-5pm day

Cons

-Poor work environment (women not allowed to wear pants, not allowed food or water at desk, not allowed any personal items at desk, no flexible hours, strict "break times, minimal group work, lack of presentations) -Culture is one of silence, not enthusiasm -Management treats employees like middle schoolers (can't get up until the "bell" rings!) -Great learning for 2-3 years, but little beyond that, due to company structure -Not given "observed holidays" as vacation days
