Pros

Solid hours for a part time job, hour-long lunch, once you pass the probation period it's difficult for you to get fired.

Cons

Managers are distant and don't look happy to be there, and they treat you accordingly. They refuse to budge the schedule, so if you have a second job or go to school, good luck getting past the probation period. Union gives you job security, but it sucks to have your check tapped each month. Depending on your personal threshold, customers can be very annoying to deal with. It's particularly stressful when you have tasks to finish, but are constantly being interrupted to help a customer.

- Most managers work around your schedule - Good first job to gain experience - Most employees are easy to get along with - No training required

Cons

- The management was very spotty and inconsistent. Some managers operated very strongly while others were simply incompetent. - Union dues take a large chunk of paychecks - Not much room to move up / increase pay. - Hours can fluctuate dramatically - Supervisors switch very often making it difficult to get acquainted with them. - Quite a bit of strenuous physical demands (standing and running)

Pros

There's a lot of opportunities to make friends and learn about foods you have never even heard of. Thanks to Vons, I now know what polenta, water chestnuts, and other things are.

Cons

Customers are the worst part of the job. The aforementioned polenta discovery was accompanied by a woman completely flabbergasted by the fact that I had never heard of it before. She then proceeded to get angry. It's been four years and I've sworn off polenta ever since.
