Very poor store management

Pros

Great customers. Von's really values and promotes good customer service.

Cons

Courtesy clerks work very hard. Outside in the hot sun for 2 hours rounding up carts, then sweeping the floors while answering customer's questions and helping them find items. Next they clean the disgusting bathrooms and then run up front to bag groceries (unsanitary!). All the while the store managers and older employees are barking orders at them non-stop. New hires are given no training, just supposed to know what to do by osmosis I suppose. The managers seem to have no time for them and are quite demeaning.

If you have unlimited availability, you find hours to work.

Cons

Don't expect to be with your family for holidays or your kids' birthdays. Scheduling is also used as a punitive tool to punish people. For example, if asked to stay over schedule, but decline, well you can expect to have a rough schedule the following week. Also, difficult for women to move up due to physical demands of job.

Pros

Employees are usually great to work with, and the store managers I've worked under and supported are generally great people - they're just overwhelmed.

Cons

It's not just Vons - everyone is trying to do more with less. But it can get overwhelming when it gets really busy, there's literally no help, and customers are all upset because it takes them 15-20 minutes to get through the checkout line at 6:30pm with only one checker scheduled because "we aren't making payroll."
