Pros

Nice building and location, plenty of parking.

Cons

The feeling you get at corporate is depressing. They are in the middle of a merge, which was actually a hostile takeover. Hgst management is very hierarchical driven and does not have an "open door" policy. Its their way or the hwy. I do not recommend working there....

Good people, bad culture

Pros

The people you work with are, for the most part, really great people who are usually more than willing to help you get things done. The internal training at WD is also pretty good, they try to keep the company up to speed on the latest developments. Their training program for new college graduates isn't bad either

Cons

The company itself doesn't care at all about its employees. It tries to emulate a Silicon Valley style without really understanding it at all. The company is slow to adapt to the market, which has caused sliding stock prices and 3 sets of layoffs with more coming. Large perks (good insurance plan, sick days, vacation) have been removed under the guise of "better deals" which are actually considerably worse. We got a ping-pong room, right around the same time they slashed our insurance benefits. It doesn't work that way. Promotions and COLA adjustments are few and far between, unless you actively press your boss about it (this may or may not work depending on your boss). If you're an electrical engineer, the job may or may not be good, I'm not too sure about the market for EEs. However, if you're a CS major you are going to be paid well under average market value. If you get placed in the wrong department, no matter how good you are, you're not going to be appreciated for your work. Frequently decisions seem to be made that benefit the shareholders, not the employees. While this isn't exactly uncommon, it's still a little depressing when you work there. Depending on your department, you might be working 12-hour days. Not because you NEED to, but because you're surrounded by people who do and you'll look bad if you don't.

No future

Pros

The compensation is at least OK or not too far off compare to others. But if work in Norcal, it is lower than others. Work hours is flexible depending on your manager. Things were great 5+ years ago but that's all history now.

Cons

Company on the decline with no light of improvement. WD subsidiary has no future as all future tech investment is in the HGST subsidiary. Content solutions team is a big disaster compare to a year ago and just keeps on getting worse. No more team spirit and employees are being treated like dirt. Engineers were pushed to work day, night and weekends and then all laid off immediately. New SVP in charge since 9 months ago only listens to himself and all politics on growing his power. He has let go 100+ people and brought in his own crew and keeping things to his small circle. Don't join unless you are truly desperate for a job or is a friend of the new person in charge.
