I worked for them 13 years...

Pros

Money, health benefits, some additional perks, some co-workers were great, but you can say that about any company

Cons

Absolutely no employee loyalty, but you can say that about any company these days Overall arrogance--there something about trash services (that EVERYONE needs) that makes WM think they are the big shots I NEVER had a customer thank me for the hard work I did, but that probably goes with the industry too. I stuck with it for the money. Lots of testosterone, politics, power plays, and the ocassional devious boy just waiting to take advantage of you. Several times on a conference call, a VP would not announce himself and would "spy" or eavesdrop just to catch you doing or saying something wrong. When WM was on TV in Undercover Boss, I could relate to everything. Pushing people so far (for productivity) that a female residental driver had to urinate in a jar on a route just about summed it all up. And lastly, I was ALWAYS told I was doing something wrong. All negativity, no positive environment which lead to extremely low morale--but that was partly my responsibility, so I quit in 2006.

Pros

Pays good, benefits are great, and hours are good even though the work can be complicated.

Cons

I was explained on my very first day, that if you dont like change you will hate this company. Things change on a regular basis.

Major cost inefficiencies. Lack of training. Lousy customer service!

Pros

Benefits were very good until recent changes in healthcare coverage. Their switch to Catalyst Rx at the first of the year has many employees upset! A nightmare of a provider that wants to dictate the care your physician provides. Truly an example of managed healthcare at its worst! Pay is very competitive. They don't have a very generous PTO/vacation policy.

Cons

I totally agree with others regarding the lack of training and a serious disconnect between management and laborers -- even middle management is too busy attending meetings to really focus on their location's operations. From office supplies to major dollar vendors, WM is the worst organization at cost analysis! I was not a driver but had contact with drivers at one time or another. The unsafe, inoperable equipment they deal with is reprehensible! I cringed when we submitted invoices for overpriced caterers to pay for management meetings, only to see a driver unable to operate his truck safely because it wasn't well maintained! Too many vendors are selected based on nepotism and cronyism. If you're a business owner needing to grow, make friends with some WM execs and your sales will increase! But then so will the WM customers' invoices!
