Pros

Wake Forest offers really generous PTO. It also does a good job of keeping staff abreast of big strategic decisions. Also, I love the access to LinkedIn learning. There are really a lot of perks (Wellness Coaching, good mental healthcare, free basketball games, etc.).

Cons

Academia tends to underinvest in management training. People get positions of management by being good at things other than management (research, teaching, fundraising). It also seems like a pretty culturally white place (I say this as a white person), pretty class-conscious.

Flexible hours if your boss isn’t a micromanager

Cons

It is appealing the senior leaders seem to have a 1950s model of leadership. Very top town and authoritarian. No transparency or seeking input from front line/customer facing employees. Smart, innovative people don’t stay long. Culture is oppressive

Coworkers are great! Sense of purpose here (students) Job stability Beautiful campus Nice benefit package

Cons

Virtually no career progression Leadership overlooks staff (focus is on faculty) Low morale Expected to work beyond job description for years because “other duties as assigned” 2% is the standard yearly increase. According to salary.com, staff I know are in the bottom 30%. Very bureaucratic and slow since the pandemic.
