Job, not a career

Pros

WeddingWire was a great place to learn basic sales skills and meet other friendly faces in the area. The office was casual with a lenient dress code, some fun amenities, and lots of young people. When I first started working there, the job felt exciting and challenging. Around when upper management changed, things shifted for the worse. The executive team is very well liked, including the CEO who is amazing. I'm not sure if they were just too busy to realize what is going on, or if they were unsure how to fix it.

Cons

To start, sales here needs to be marketed as a short-term JOB and not a position that will lead to any type of career growth. The people who get promoted and are in management positions are there due to either favoritism or tenure. Most of them do not seem qualified to be leading teams, and you can tell by their passive aggression and lack of professionalism. They'll cheer you on every month, but do very little to help their teams hit their unrealistic goals. Somehow, the quotas just keep going up while the markets are getting more and more saturated and less advertisers are seeing success. Somewhere along the way the past 4 years, the focus shifted from genuinely helping these advertisers grow their businesses with a successful product, to just needing to hit your goal no matter what with a product that was going downhill. As most other reviews say, the favoritism is absurd. There are a select few who will get anything they want and will be favored by upper management because they sit on the best markets and reap the benefits of it. It seems to be 2 very different pay tiers here: the top ~10 reps in the company who do very well, and everyone else. Many people find it hard to pay DC rent and living with a starting salary of just 38k. It's a repetitive job where you will have to work very hard to hit the number in front of you, and your efforts won't always match your outcome. Micromanaging can get out of control, and it seems there is a negative feeling across all departments that the company has become unfavorable and unenjoyable. I'm not sure who could be writing these "awesome, everything is amazing here!" reviews..

Pros

The opportunity WeddingWire has provided me in terms of career growth has been incredible. They helped me go from someone who just graduated college, to someone who has the freedom to make a meaningful difference on our Marketing team. I feel trusted amongst my teammates, and the feeling is mutual. We are constantly innovating, researching, and pushing one another to find the best possible route for a given project, and each and every learning experience is a gift. On a more personal level, each team is pretty close knit - and departments do many team building activities/trips/events to promote good camaraderie. From a corporate standpoint, there are also a lot of opportunities to mingle with those in different departments, along with great company parties/happy hours to reward hard work! For a company that has grown exponentially in my time here (there were 130 employees when I joined, now there are around 600+ internationally), I'm extremely impressed with how even when there have been blips, they are handled with grace, learned from, and corrected. Complacency rarely exists, and if it does, it's not long lived. On a final note, the Exec team is tremendous. They make a true effort to get to know their employees BY NAME, and will never hesitate to greet you in passing. It's great to feel like you go to work everyday working for people you actually like, instead of the usual grind of corporate America.

Cons

I believe WeddingWire gives us the freedom to determine our professional destinies - and with hard (and smart!) work, you won't be disappointed. However, the work environment may not suit everyone. For example, we have a ping pong table, speakeasy, unlimited PTO, etc - and these things are meant to be used to the extent that they don't interfere with your productivity. If you're unable to manage your time due to these distractions (or those similar), it's possible you'll have a hard time succeeding.

Pros

Benefits appear okay, but there's no such thing as "unlimited" PTO. Massage chairs and game tables, but you feel odd using them when you're supposed to be working. You can drink whenever you want, apparently. It seems like an HR nightmare, but if you love day drinking at work in the early morning, then this is the place for you! Casual dress too (including sweatpants and slippers, because this whole company is a joke)

Cons

You'll only succeed or "move up" if you're a favorite or in a certain clique. High turnover rate, and not just for sales. Pay is extremely low for the area, you can work at many other "cool" companies for less chaos and more pay nearby.
