Great Employer!

Pros

I have worked for Wellmark for over two years now and have seen such a great effort by an employer to create a comfortable and inviting work experience. Not only do they provide a great environment, but they have great benefits! From being able to push a button on your desk and have it raise to stand and work to their state of the art, full service gym which is FREE to all employees and one family member! They offer a full range of daily classes which includes spinning, personal training, massage therapy and a wide assortment of gym equipment. Not only that, but they pay you to go to the gym! Very few employers offer both a 401k with a 4% match and a Pension at 6% of your earnings, as well as a Medical Retiree account of $3,000 per year. Then, there is the college tuition with no waiting period of up to $15,000 per year and student loan repayment of $5,000 per year after one year of employment. There is covered parking in the winter for all which is priceless in Iowa and you do not have to leave for breakfast or lunch because they have a full-service cafeteria offering both breakfast and lunch. Then there is the bistro where you can get your latte or daily fresh popped popcorn. They encourage professional growth and make it possible to move across business lines to other areas, as well as offer resume assistance.

Cons

Wellmark has the same, expected challenges as does any business, but if you have to go to work for 8 hours a day, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else!

Great Organization - Messy Projects

Pros

The culture at Wellmark, for the most part, is phenomenal. Leadership encourages growth, and supports employee development. The CEO is knowledgable and accessible. Inclusion is a priority.

Cons

Project work is chaotic. The Technology Division has specific guidelines for project documentation, most of which cannot be bypassed without taking on additional bureaucratic waiver processes. Even when projects have been approved as non-life cycle, team members are still required to produce irrelevant documentation that holds limited value. Limited workplace flexibility. There is a strict "no-work-from-home" policy. Management isn't interested in considering telecommuting as an option for employees. While I don't necessarily disagree with that decision - they leave no room for event the slightest adjustments. Allowing your employees to log a full day of work when they sign on from home after leaving for an appointment in the afternoon, rather than requiring that they use PTO would make a huge difference for morale.

Pros

Benefits are great. Employer cares about their employees.

Cons

Being in the Individual Market customer Service Department, like any call center, you are pretty tied to the phones.
