Very Good Place to Work

Pros

Excellent work environment with challenging work and plenty of opportunity to make a big impact. Good pay and benefits(*). Great work/life balance. Management that is involved in decisions when needed, but doesn't meddle. Appetite for growth via acquisition has been the modus operandi for the past several years which leads to new opportunities.

Cons

(*) The one drawback to the benefits is maternity/paternity paid leave. My former employer offered 16 weeks of full pay maternity/paternity leave for birth or adoption (which was exceptional). This organization has not been adopted that benefit, or a variation of it, for a variety of reasons, but, when brought up to Senior Management, the idea is quickly dismissed as nonsensical. If the business reasons are valid for not offering this, that is understandable, but make sure the message is delivered appropriately. Note: FMLA is offered for parental leave to care for a newborn or newly adopted or placed child and PTO can be used (as I understand it). The other benefit not offered is sick time, but lumped into PTO. This is also a disadvantage as compared to previous employer offerings. Another concern is that our growth is spurred mostly by acquisitions and affiliations and organic growth of the core business has slowed.

We’re happy that you find Western National a great place to work, and we’re pleased to read your comment about work/life balance—especially since one of the attributes of our mission statement is working with people and businesses who have a passion for both business and life. We also appreciate your feedback on areas where we can improve. As an organization, we keep an eye on benefit trends and state/local legislation. These are balanced with our employee demographics to determine what holistic offerings will benefit our organization. Our Benefits Program Manager is always available to listen to employee suggestions and takes them into consideration each year as benefits are reviewed with Senior Management. If you have additional notes, please feel free to stop by Human Resources or email us at HRmail@wnins.com. Thanks for the thoughtful review!
