Pros

What gets measured gets improved. Good employees. Leader in Safety. Good pay. Great place when home building cycle is on the up. Build quality homes, satisfied customers and doing it safely. Ethics are very important.

Cons

Recent changes in benefits not that great. Cyclical business. The recent down trend in home building has truly been depressing.

Pros

Excellent work life balance with onsite fitness center, reasonable flexibility in work hours, occasional telecommuting (great remote access tools). Most employees/contractors are very competent...especially after the major downsizing in 2009 due to the recession. Lots of interest in sustainability, biofuels and other innovations relative to using trees (WY is certified in sustainable forestry and treats and cares for its timberlands as vital, renewable assets).

Cons

Still a big company so still a lot of politics, and managers enjoy and favor their sycophants. Mixed bag on pay, they compare themselves nationally for IT salaries despite the fact there is high demand for IT, and higher salaries, a few miles north in Seattle. Company was well positioned to catch the full force of the recession: 3 of the 4 major company divisions are tied to housing (Real Estate, Building Materials, and Timberlands), so it is still reeling. Significant recovery with current business mix will lag the rest of the economy by 12-18 months so Co is hunkered down. New innovations are probably years away from market.

Pros

At the local level, workers respect each other and work together toward a common good. But local managers can only do so much against the tide of bloated, top heavy corporate overhead and ineffective senior managers.

Cons

WeyCo corporate is top heavy and rewards senior managers well. But employees who actually produce products that make happy customers are not fairly rewarded. Safety is a prime goal, which is a noble corporate cause. But current over-emphasis on RIR figures has pushed injuries 'underground'. While numbers reported to OSHA are in fact down, worker's comp attorneys are happy, and senior managers get to pat themselves on the back and pad their bonuses, the realty from someone in the trenches is that un-reported injuries are happening.
