Pros

-Relaxed office atmosphere -Line managers and local colleagues are terrific -Great work/life balance I love the people I work with, and the company's been very good to me since I started. I really enjoy the work.

Cons

-Advancement opportunities hard to come by unless willing to switch jobs -Technology needs overhaul -Massive reorganization that's resulting in a lot of good people losing their jobs, but most of the decision-makers keeping theirs -Terrible internal communication In a time of huge change for the publishing industry, Wiley's following suit with a lot of competitors and reorganizing. This is to be expected, but it's concerning that so many people are being let go globally while most of the upper leadership remains intact with new layers added in. Communication regarding this reorganization has also been severely lacking.

Pros

A virtual paradise for people new to day-side editorial work. Come in at 8 to 8:30 a.m., leave 4 to 4:30 p.m. Easy-to-handle workload vis-a-vis more demanding editorial jobs. Collegial environment, full amenities, super location for commuters. Very generous benefits.

Cons

Management apparently can't distinguish great editors from good or subpar editors, so opportunities for promotion are virtually nil — unless you're in sales/marketing, in which case you can move out of the cubicles quickly and into an office. "Lifers" can bog down simple operational processes. Quite hard to "work the room" and build your personal reputation among other potential managers who could promote you; far too "chain-of-command" oriented, which allows credit-stealing managers to keep their iron grip on cushy jobs.
