Toxic work environment

Pros

- the culture started strong but has not been getting worse over time, but remnants of old culture is still there occasionally - teams are very international and diverse - product is global, so you feel like you are having impact across many regions - work is interesting

Cons

- product is lacking in comparison to other banking companies because designers and PMs are not given the freedom to innovate. Top management has too much control over what teams ship. - support for women in engineering is horrible, especially empowering mid level engineers to grow. Less than 2% of staff/senior engineers are women, and the overall company percentage is about 10 percent, which is still significantly lower than industry standard - we keep hiring managers with low EQ. Have repeatedly faced aggression and frustration rather than guidance and positivity from upper management - mentorship is not encouraged at all, and teams feel competitive when it comes to delivering work

Pros

WFH flexibility, competitive leave benefits, and a good office environment. Team members are generally capable and collaborative.

Cons

Career progression is unclear and limited beyond the initial period. Leadership quality and support are inconsistent, with favouritism influencing opportunities, recognition, and advancement. Guidance and expectations are not applied uniformly across team members, and leadership selectively chooses whose feedback to acknowledge or act on, which undermines trust. Management practices make it difficult to raise concerns constructively. While employees are encouraged to have “uncomfortable conversations,” feedback is often met with defensiveness, with little leadership support to enable productive outcomes. Team culture has declined over time, with cliques forming and unprofessional behaviour not consistently addressed. There is also inconsistent accountability. Team members are able to selectively choose who they collaborate with, and contributions are not always recognised fairly—ideas are sometimes reused without appropriate credit, with limited leadership intervention despite awareness. Continuity is also lacking when team leads change, resulting in lost context around individual development and progression. Rather than investing in growth within the team, leadership has explicitly suggested moving to other teams when advancement is not available.
