Pros

Challenging work that has a positive impact on the world. I cared about my projects and daily responsibilities. You can make your mark and impact the way Cree operates. You learn to move fast and get stuff done--the culture is fast-paced and results-driven. Excellent benefits.

Cons

Harsh managerial atmosphere. In R&D business unit, 50hr/week mandatory minimum plus phone calls and email on the weekend. Scientists (PhD) are treated with more respect and have better career progression than Engineers (Masters or Bachelors). Very slow career progression for Engineers. Few opportunities to gain leadership experience.

Pros

Work is extremely interesting, and you'll get a ton of experience that will be valuable anywhere. Coworkers are generally pretty awesome, and management is pretty accessible. If you work hard, you'll be in charge of important projects within a few months. Good benefits plus an amazing stock purchase program. Lots of opportunities to rise but only if you want to manage people.

Cons

Work life balance is heavily skewed towards work. You will be regularly told to do way more work than can be reasonably accomplished in a day, particularly if you work second shift (all engineers start here). Higher-ups on day shift like to dump whatever they couldn't finish by six in your lap.

Pros

None. At least in my group.

Cons

HUGE disparity between groups and departments. Some groups literally work 80 hours a week. A lot of young engineers don't realize what that means when they interview. If you're a new engineer you'll be working second shift so that means working from 12pm - 4am, 5 days a week. Oh and don't expect to get any days off approved. You'll be working 16 hour days on Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years, 4th of July, etc. Other groups work from 8am - 5pm with a 1.5 hour lunch. At 5:01 they're gone. A good rule of thumb is anything related to LED R&D or LED production is going to suck. Other groups are hit or miss.
