Pros

WPI is one of the ,pst generous schools around when it comes to adjunct and instructor pay. Professors have a great deal of autonomy in designing their classes. Fantastic colleagues and really smart and capable students. Great benefits (downside is pay, see below)

Cons

Lack of prerequisites (school policy) means that you sometimes get ill prepared students. The down-side of professor autonomy is that the programs can be a bit disjoint. All the usual things about academia lagging industry and the usual mixed-message frustration of any large organization be it academic or industry. Even at WPIs unusually generous level, its pretty hard to support a middle class family on just what one instructor makes.

Pros

Family-like community. People from all over the world so it's very diverse. I was able to earn my Master's Degree there PT while working there FT and I was allowed as much flexibility as I needed. The people are great! It's got a great culture and there's always something fun going on with events. It's also one of the most beautiful campuses so it's really nice to walk around and have outdoor meetings and events and lunch. Working with the students, faculty, alumni, and visitors is the ultimate reward!

Cons

Since it's such a great place to work, turnover for jobs is really low. It can take many months from the time you see a job posting until you're able to even interview. But I think it's like that at any college because people are generally so happy in their line of work.
