Christmas Promoter

Pros

Pay was good which included weekend rates. I was a casual promoter in shopping centres, usually working with one or two other people at a time. I liked being able to work with lots of different people. Training was very thorough - two full days of paid training for all staff whether they were new promoters or existing promoters.

Cons

The shifts were very inconsistent - I was a Christmas casual promoter for two Christmas periods - the first year I had about 3-4 shifts a week and the second year, I only had 1-2 shifts per week. During training, there is a cultish atmosphere about the good work that World Vision does, painting the picture that as promoters, we were on the frontline, improving the world with every person we spoke to when, at the core of it, we were sales people and all charities are businesses. Training was thorough in the sense that they trained us very well in sales/promotion through philanthropic buzz words, however I feel like the people who were training us only told us as much as we needed to know. There was also a strong sense of favouritism among existing promoters or people who were quite outspoken. I think maybe I am just quite cynical.

Pros

Cooperative management, good training facility, feel valued, good compensation, humanitarian work so you can feel your humanity.

Cons

There were not many cons in this type of work, except for being away from my house and after that I need to go further distance to meet with the Syrian refugees. The management was cooperative on this side, but of course they need to finish all lists arranged to help refugees.
