Pros

The reputation of being from yale

Cons

no organization, administrators dont know what they are doing. Shared lab spaces are not taken care of. Untrained people from other countries destroy areas and put people in danger but theres no structure at yale so theres no way to get help about it. As they say "its better to be from yale than at yale."

Pros

Allowed for fully remote work, good name, tuition reimbursement at Yale and other universities

Cons

Very hierarchical and title obsessed. I was used to calling instructors or peers with a PhD/doctorate by their first name in academia. Not here. I found this pretentious, old fashioned and unnecessary. If you work for someone who falls in the world of celebrity academic, beware. I was treated like a personal assistant/scheduler a lot by my celebrity academic boss--which wasn't a part of the job description or shared at any point during the interview process. The interview/hiring process takes forever so keep other options in your back pocket. The pay is not good.

Great benefits, not so great management

Pros

The benefits are excellent. Many vacation, sick, holiday, and school recess days off. Retirement benefits are wonderful. Most coworkers are great people who are pleasant to work with. Met many amazing coworkers here who will be lifelong friends. The department I worked in was very understanding about family and personal needs that arose and were very flexible about accommodating them. My supervisor was approachable and quick to help when needed.

Cons

I was disappointed with HR and the way leadership does things. Many promises made but not kept. It is virtually impossible to be promoted within your own department. If you want to move up, you have to go elsewhere within Yale. Unfortunately, most employees know this and it leads to a chaotic and revolving door environment since people leave if there’s no growth possibilities. This results in constant turmoil as staff leaves and new staff must be brought in. Other cons: paying for parking is ridiculous. Huge disparity in salaries that should be addressed. Painfully bureaucratic processes that make getting work done much more difficult than it needs to be.
