Great people and a stable, but slow-moving company
Pros
Great people! Everyone I worked with seemed to care about what we were doing and was invested in the company. The president (Alex Moghadam) and most of the management seem to actually care about the people in the company rather than just “headcounts“. It’s a great feeling to work in the medical field where you are actually helping people care for patients and make the world a little better. There were opportunities to do ride-alongs or sit with customers and see how they use the software and how it helps (and sometimes hinders) the life-saving work they do. Occasional hackathons and small, cross-team projects were a great way to learn new technologies and work with people across the company.
Cons
Most of the markets for existing products are stagnant or shrinking, so the company has struggled with budget to hire and keep good engineers. There are a ton of existing products/software, so major infrastructure or architecture changes take a very long time (years) to implement. Not a good place for the impatient. All of the fun/interesting development on new projects is outsourced because in-house developers are tied to maintaining the existing software. Mobile (iOS/Android) projects have been unfocused and underfunded. The company had a decent start 8 years ago, but then completely stopped for 4 years. It has picked back up in the last year, but very inconsistent. Very little incentive or encouragement for personal or career development. It’s easy to become technically stagnant and stuck working on old projects using old technology. They do offer resources like Udemy or Pluralsight, but any learning is on your own time.
