Not engineer friendly

Pros

- Plenty of snacks, coffee and carbonated water - Weekly catered Monday lunch - Decent 401(k) with employer match

Cons

- Inexperienced leaders are promoted from within. Frequent political drama and backstabbing leads to highly toxic work environment. - Engineers treated as second class citizens. - Most senior engineers and several managers have been either forced out or quit. This year has seen a very high level of attrition and the company is struggling to backfill. - Engineers are scapegoated after they leave. - No clear vision of where products will be 6 months or more out. This leads to constant roadmap changes. - Pay is lower than industry standards.

Thank you for writing your review and I felt compelled to respond directly. 2018 was a difficult year for our Engineering team. While that is true, the underlying reason was that Engineering built a great product that the market wanted. This rapid adoption pushed our systems, but every Zapprovian who was part of our journey getting us to this level should be incredibly proud of the hard work they contributed. We wouldn’t be where we are today without you. In terms of the scapegoat comment, this personally hurts. I believe that everyone brings their best to the job and I hope we honor and respect that. However, we also need to reflect and always learn and improve. It is inherent to our culture so that everyone can come along with us on that learning path. I realize that some of that could come across as scapegoating even though it is never my intention. I have sincere gratitude and respect for each of you who helped us get to this stage. What causes the most concern is seeing this post on Christmas Eve. Knowing that you were feeling this way on the holiday weekend makes me very sad. I encourage you to call me or email me so we can process this together over coffee or lunch. I’d never want anyone, current employee or an alum to feel this way. You are clearly someone who is incredibly passionate about your work. If I can ever be of help please call me anytime. -Monica

Pros

Amazing coworkers that help each other. Open vacation policy (take what you need). Company focus on diversity and inclusion has increased. Good ideas and given a try more often than not without ego getting in the way. Company-paid lunches once a week. Good resume builder out of college with opportunity to grow and learn other areas of the business.

Cons

VC acquisition took away stock options for employees. Low pay and mediocre benefits. Executive team feeling the push of the new company ownership and taking it out on other employees. Nepotism for "favorites" that are create a toxic work environment. Turnover of quality people is high. Existing customers being left behind where traditionally "Keep customers ridiculously happy" was the rally cry. Only focus is on selling new deals with very little energy kept on keeping customers. Transparency is fading away, which is to be expected of a company as it grows to an extent, but management still consider themselves to be extremely transparent. No formal process for raises, performance reviews, etc. Company focused more on cheap hires than experienced hires means a lot of time is spent training people who may not actually fit the role.

Too many things wrong with this place...

Pros

FTO ( which a lot of companies are adopting anyways) Snacks Some co-workers are extremely bright and fun.

Cons

Opaque management style and yet touts transparency. Senior management inconsistent with internal message to employees on company outlook and direction. Flip flop on key direction is normal and frequent and, employees are supposed to just play along. Compensation well below market for similar jobs. Leadership is slowing ebbing away as talented senior people are leaving/left/told to leave. Some people promoted beyond their level of competency and have no idea how to manage people or run a team. Benefits continue to degrade due to PE. Still no performance review process to ensure employees are advancing in their careers nor is there a structure for fair compensation. No raises and no bonus structure. Pretty toxic environment with back stabbing and fake-ness.
