Pros

Overall BP is most interested in the people, then the profits. Personal politics or hidden agendas are not part of the company culture. The various locations and wide range of colleagues is also a great advantage to anyone wanting to advance their global view. The company is also interested in people developing beyond where they currently perform.

Cons

Public impressions of oil companies; it's hard to stand out in a crowd so talented and top-notch; there is little down time due to the high value of our work. Of course there is a certain amount of over-working and struggle to maintain boundaries, but since most managers are working as hard or harder than their team members, it is all relative and managable. BP is always trying to improve and this leads to confusion and "transformation" processes that can be demoralizing and distracting. Sometimes they let good people go and this creates job insecurities. Finally, because there is a predominance of top-talent at BP, it can be hard to be a star.

Pros

It was a semi easy retail position. This position had its ups and downs, the customers could be great on a good day. When there was a good team present, things could ge accomplished on that particular site. Management changed often, but some mangement team members were assets to the team.

Cons

The politics factor. The PR crap that expect us to project to the customers. Employees were expected to avoid answering questions on the Texas refinery explosion, gas pricing, canopy collapses, and stolen credit card number questions. The usage of secret shoppers and constant new policies are a down fall, when they were unfairly used. Managment would play favorites and the lack of video and audio in managment offices made it hard to prove a case involving management, but they were sure to use these tools when employees were video taped 24/7. Phone call monitoring is also tracked. When we experienced the new internet time clock and automated points system, it was time to go.

Pros

It is a place holder job. Since they took over Amoco and ARCO they have taken on the philosophy of burning through employees and then discarding them - just like Pepsi in the 1990's.

Cons

If you are not BP heritage or a Brit, your upward mobility is severely limited. It is especially limited if you are ARCO heratige.
