Pros

ON pays a competitive salary. ON is a conglomerate of acquired older technology semiconductor manufacturers. ON employs many talented people globally.

Cons

The good 'ol boy Motorola culture is still around. There is no manufacturing at the corporate headquarters in Phoenix. To be an effective engineer working from Corporate, you have to work virtually on product engineering projects with engineers from the acquired factories. Many times, the engineers from the acquired factories are resentful towards those from corporate making it difficult to succeed. There is no trust between business units. Business units have to compete amongst each other and the only measure is profit. Top down, directive management style in some business units. ON's management culture is a few generations back. There is no employee training in the myriad of ON systems. The multiple ON systems are a direct result of growth through acquisition. There is no synchronization of the multiple data systems inherited from acquisition.

Pros

Great place if you have no desire to compete with other companies and the most important attribute is to be liked by the business units. Drivers will be punished. Sycophants are most welcome.

Cons

If you are not a discarded member of the old Motorola Semiconductor split that got cast to the woeful ON Semiconductor side rather than the Freescale's, and preferably lives in Phoenix at their headquarters, don't bother trying to get ahead at this company. It has to be one of the biggest cases of cronyism anywhere. If you're part of their "ex-Motorola club" you can get away with being as lazy and incompetent as you can imagine. Dilbert's Wally would be proud. However, if you're not part of the "click", then beware. If you fall in the "disliked by the business units mostly incompetent clowns, your career will be short lived. ON Semiconductor, where careers go do die...

Pros

Good people to work with in engineering No dress-code Generally casual atmosphere in engineering They appear to be growing strong and have not had a layoff or furlough in a couple of years

Cons

Poor labor practices in manufacturing operations (long temp-to-hire process) Poor review, promotion, and raise structure ~50 hours per week mandatory (poor work-life balance) Overly compartmentalized Slightly below industry average for wages and benefits (and getting worse: health insurance gets worse every year, raises are very small)
