      Old business, too much work

      Pros

      There are many smart people who work very hard at ON. There is a wide variety of engineering roles to choose from. There are many different cultures to work with and international travel opportunities.

      Cons

      Work-life balance is almost non-existent. With factories all over the world, expect to work many hours/day and always be behind. The semiconductor business is very mature and hyper competitive. It has become a grind. There is little chance for upward mobility.

      Formerly Aptina, got acquired by ON

      Pros

      ON Semi is quite big and has a lot of different divisions that you can potentially join. Aptina was acquired by ON. It was one of the few tech companies in the Bay that had a good work life balance.

      Cons

      It often felt that no one in the company had any passion or fight in them. The age of the workers there were generally very old. It felt like the company's average age was in its late 30s at least.

      Good Engineering Job (Depending on division you're in)

      Pros

      On Semiconductor does a great job of shipping lots of commodity parts. The division I worked in was involved in designing custom chips for different industries (ASICs) which kept the design work interesting.

      Cons

      Division targets (goals) were out of the control of the workers. Also layoffs would occur depending on the strength of the entire company regardless of the needs/successes of the divisions. Seems like working shorthanded is the new trend in "efficiency".
