We’re thrilled to announce M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital, Southdale Hospital, and University of Minnesota Medical Center are three of Minnesota’s top 10 hospitals this year, according to U.S. News & World Report. Plus, six M Health Fairview specialty care programs were recognized nationally as high performers. “Our steady improvement in the U.S. News & World Report rankings show the hard work our teams have done to standardize care delivery and deliver high-quality care across the system," said Abe Jacob, MD, MHA, M Health Fairview's chief quality officer, and an associate professor with University of Minnesota Medical School. "Minnesotans can be confident that when they enter an M Health Fairview facility, that there is a team caring for them deeply committed to high quality and safe care."
Exciting news: Tanja Oquendo, JD, is joining Fairview as our new chief people officer (CPO), effective Aug. 12. Oquendo brings extensive human resources experience to Fairview and has demonstrated success shaping employee engagement and workplace culture. Prior to joining Fairview, Oquendo was chief administrative officer, chief human resources officer, and system senior vice president of transformation and integration at Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit healthcare systems. As CPO, Oquendo will help drive Fairview forward by leading efforts that promote culture, diversity, equity, inclusion, and organizational growth. She champions people-first strategies that help organizations exceed goals related to quality, safety, customer service, and engagement. “I am confident that Tanja’s ability to build high-performance cultures while maintaining a values- and mission-driven focus will help our system continue to tackle the unique workforce challenges facing the healthcare industry,” said James Hereford, Fairview president and CEO.
Year after year, our doctors are recognized as some of the best in their fields. We are proud more than 220 M Health Fairview providers were named “Top Doctors” in 2024 by Mpls.St.Paul Magazine – more than any other single health system in the Twin Cities. "It’s exciting to see so many of our doctors recognized by their peers for providing exceptional care, as it reaffirms their dedication to the community,” said Jaya Kumar, MD, MBA, chief medical officer with Fairview Health Services. “And we have many more compassionate physicians who share the commitment to providing high-quality, patient-focused care.” Find out if your doctor made the list: https://bit.ly/3VVPCLU hashtag#TopDocs | hashtag#TopDoctors

A 107-year legacy of care. That’s how long Lisa Mitchell’s family of nurses has been supporting patients at M Health Fairview Northland Medical Center and across Minnesota. It started with Lisa’s grandmother, Rita, who became a nurse during the Great Depression. Lisa’s mother, Bonnie, worked for over 50 years at M Health Fairview Northland Medical Center. Lisa not only followed in her family’s footsteps – she inspired her daughter, Marisa Mitchell, and her niece, Jordyn Meyer-Pauly, to become nurses alongside her at Northland. “It’s an inspiration that they’re both here and my mom gave us that inspiration,” Lisa Mitchell said. “I think it is in our genes.”
What a day! Arts, music, culture – Minnesota Public Radio/The Current's hashtag#RockTheCradle had it all on Sunday. As Minnesota’s most comprehensive and convenient children’s health system, M Health Fairview Pediatrics was thrilled to be this year’s presenting sponsor, and to share a special summer moment with thousands of families! Our Child and Family Life Services team inspired kids at our art therapy space, introduced them to new instruments at our music therapy booth, and showed them how to be caregivers at our Teddy Bear clinic space. And to keep family’s sun safe, we gave out free sunscreen and UV bracelets. Thank you to everyone who joined us at Minneapolis Institute of Art this weekend! hashtag#ChildrensHealth | hashtag#AllAboutTheKids
During a proclamation ceremony today, Fairview Health Services was officially recognized as a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon organization for our efforts to support service members, veterans, and their families inside and outside our health system. Fairview, with more than 34,000 employees, is now one of the largest employers in Minnesota to achieve Beyond the Yellow Ribbon status. To be certified, employers must take a number of steps, including adopting supportive policies like paid leave for military training and service. Our Veterans Allies & Advocates employee resource group and Beyond the Yellow Ribbon steering committee have worked hard for several years to earn this distinction. “When an organization like Fairview steps up and says: ‘We’re going to go beyond putting on the yellow ribbon, we’re going to go beyond saying thank you, and we’re going to deliver results,’ that makes life easier for our warriors, for their families, and for the Minnesota National Guard,” said Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who attended the event. “This organization lives its values, day in and day out on so many fronts. Minnesota’s lucky to have Fairview, so thank you.” Congratulations to all the teams and leaders who helped our health system achieve this designation. Three M Health Fairview hospitals – Ridges, Southdale, and Woodwinds – have all been recognized as High Performers on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2024 Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). The award acknowledges our hospital’s dedication to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ patients, visitors, and employees. “It is a testament to our system’s commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion for our employees and patients,” said Duane Orlovski, health equity program manager. “Participating in the HEI allows us to see where we can continuously improve as an employer and a healthcare provider.” Congratulations to all our teams, including hospital staff and members of our Pride Alliance Group for Equality (PAGE) employee resource group, who made this possible and who continue to have a positive, transformational impact on health equity across our system.
Today, M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital celebrates its 40th anniversary. Brian Knapp, vice president of operations with Fairview Health Services, feels lucky to have played a key role opening the hospital in 1984 alongside many other dedicated staff. In 1982, Knapp became deeply involved in the Ridges Hospital project as an assistant administrator and owner’s representative on the construction of the more than 100,000-square-foot facility. “Beyond construction, it was an amazing experience hiring the leadership team and staff to open the hospital,” Knapp said. "In addition to organizing the medical staff, grant privileges, provide onboarding for a new team, we moved the Emergency Department, part of Fairview Southdale Hospital, across Nicollet Blvd. from the Ridges Medical Building to open the hospital.” Now, after 45 years with the organization, Knapp is proud to work with dedicated colleagues and loves seeing the positive impact of Ridges Hospital on the community. “Kind words and gestures, improved outcomes, creating memories of caring and kindness delivered by our team during difficult health circumstances, seeing the responses of patients and families, and the recognition they give to team members – all reflect the care and connection we make with our community.” Join us in celebrating Ridges’ 40th anniversary by sharing your memories from the hospital! 👏 hashtag#CommunityHospital | hashtag#Healthcare
