An incredible milestone: 10,000 lives saved through the gift of kidney transplant. Retired police officer and firefighter Dale Sorensen has the honor of being M Health Fairview's 10,001st kidney transplant recipient. Dale needed a dual kidney and pancreas transplant, a more complex procedure that will help protect his new kidney from potential diabetes-related damage down the road. Sixty years after University of Minnesota physicians performed the first kidney transplant in Minnesota, the M Health Fairview kidney transplant team continues to advance transplant care in Minnesota, including with new, more precise ways of matching donors and recipients. Read Dale’s story and learn more about what’s next in kidney transplant.
As part of an academic health system, we are committed to educating the next generation of healthcare professionals. This week, M Health Fairview staff participated in Scrubs Camp at Saint Paul College-A Community and Technical College, where they taught high school students about careers in #healthcare and provided interactive educational activities, like checking vitals, finding veins, providing respiratory support, and more. We are grateful to our employees and the college for providing an opportunity to increase awareness an interest in healthcare and make a difference in young people’s lives. #Careers | #ProfessionalDevelopment
M Health Fairview is proud to announce the opening of our specialized Donor Care Unit, in partnership with LifeSource. This state-of-the-art facility will revolutionize deceased organ recovery, increasing the number of lives saved and enhancing the gift of life for transplant recipients and their families. Heather Johnson took the stage at M Health Fairview's pinwheel celebration event, recounting the remarkable journey of her son Keegan, whose life was transformed by the gift of an organ donor's liver. “The smiles came back, his health improved, and after 17 days, we were able to leave the hospital with a second chance at life,” she said at the media event. "The Donor Care Unit will allow us to further our mission, better serve our community, and improve the way we work so we can heal and save more lives,” said Andrew Adams, MD, executive medical director of solid organ transplant at M Health Fairview and a professor and chief of the division of transplantation at University of Minnesota Medical School. The Donor Care Unit will provide a dedicated care team and advanced equipment, including cutting-edge imaging and diagnostic technology, to optimize organ care and improve transplant outcomes. The Donor Care Unit will open in the spring of 2024. Read more on our blog. ➡ https://bit.ly/3OfPzYC
This June, our leaders, team members, and their families came together to make wellness a part of Twin Cities Pride! At M Health Fairview Living Well Park, groups from across our system provided free sunscreen, over 150 blood pressure checks, and over 300 #Mpox vaccines for event goers. Speakers from across our system also shared about our Comprehensive Gender Care Program and resources available for those seeking gender-affirming care. The festival finished with our teams in a sea of bright pink marching in the parade and supporting our mission to advance inclusive and equitable healthcare to everyone in our communities! We are grateful to all our staff and teams who joined us to make this weekend a success!

Cheryl Chapman sees people during life’s most difficult moments as ICU coordinator at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital. Fifteen years ago, she had the idea to help ease the pain for families who lost loved ones. That’s when the “Comfort Quilts” program was born. Cheryl, her mother, and sister began sewing and ultimately made over 2,000 quilts in their first decade. Families can use the quilts to make end-of-life care more comfortable for their loved ones, then take them home as a cherished reminder and a token of kindness during a difficult time. “It touched our hearts,” said Jennifer Park, whose daughter Maria passed away at the hospital last year. “We have the quilt hanging up in our living room beside pictures of Maria and many of the paintings she created. We treasure it so much, because of what it represents.” Cheryl now has two volunteers who help her create the quilts; altogether, she and her helpers have made over 3,000 quilts since starting the program. “It’s all about how we can lessen the pain for a family,” she said. “I come to the ICU every day by choice, but
