Overdose deaths are increasing among young Minnesotans, and Minnesota schools are now required by law to have a supply of overdose medication in school buildings. To help address this rising concern, M Health Fairview community care specialists led a naloxone training and kit-packing event this morning with students at Roosevelts High School’s Health Careers Program, teaching them how the life-saving drug can be used to reverse an opioid overdose. Ingrid Johansen, RN, director of community clinical care with M Health Fairview said, “This is about empowering youth with the knowledge around this epidemic that has impacted so many of us.” Learn about this initiative: https://bit.ly/3Q7rEKC #HealthcareCareers | #CommunityOutreach
Patient-centered care is our top priority. We’re thrilled to announce four M Health Fairview hospitals – Fairview Range, M Health Fairview Northland, M Health Fairview Southdale, and M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center – were honored with the Vizient, Inc Bernard A. Birnbaum Quality and Accountability Award for their outstanding commitment to providing high-quality patient care for our communities. Our hospitals received high marks for quality of care and safety in multiple categories, something M Health Fairview Chief Quality Officer Abe Jacob, MD, attributes to the “exceptional work everyone in our system has done to improve quality and safety for our patients.” “It’s great to see organizations outside of our system noting the incredible work of our teams,” Jacob added. Congratulations to our incredible providers, staff, and employees who made this possible!
Family Medicine Physician Jeremy Peterson, MD, is on a mission to make our communities healthier. Peterson was recently appointed as the new medical advisor for the Princeton Public School district, a role which he is thrilled to fill. “Promoting healthy living and proactively caring for the student population outside of the walls of our clinic and hospital has been the vision I sought in aligning our organization with my local school district,” Peterson said. “I cannot find a better way to fit this with M Health Fairview’s mission to heal, discover, and educate for longer and healthier lives.” Last week, Peterson celebrated National Walk to School Day alongside his patients, family, and community, “walking the walk” to encourage and promote lifelong health. Help us congratulate Peterson for keeping our communities strong! 👏
New research looking to elevate smartwatches from fitness novelties to diagnostic medical tools are getting a boost thanks to Fairview Frontiers – the research division of Fairview Health Services specializing in technological clinical trials. These studies are determining if optical sensors in smartwatches can identify sleep apnea, irregular heartbeats, and other health problems. This year alone, Fairview Frontiers successfully recruited almost 1,000 participants for these trials, a growing number of which were minorities. Focusing on the importance of diversity in clinical trials has made Frontiers a go-to recruiter when tech giants such as Apple or Garmin launch their studies. “All of these sensors are optically based, which means they are trying to read things through light. That’s one of the reasons why we need so many people with different colored skin, because the results might be quite different,” said Andrew Snyder, director of clinical trials for M Health Fairview. Thanks to a remarkable $10 million grant from The Helmsley Charitable Trust, M Health Fairview is launching an #ECMO Center of Excellence to nearly double our health system’s ECMO therapy capacity, bringing hope to those facing sudden #CardiacArrest. Every minute matters in these emergencies. ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) temporarily supports heart and lung functions, boosting survival chances. As ECMO capacity expands, we’re growing the Minnesota Mobile Resuscitation Consortium (MMRC), which is now under Fairview’s ownership. The partnership between Fairview and MMRC will expand the lifesaving care model in the Twin Cities, greater Minnesota, and five-state region so that we can provide life-saving care for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest statewide. Our commitment to innovation and cardiac care comes as demand for ECMO treatment rises. Together, we're shaping the future of treatment. Learn more. ➡ https://bit.ly/45SvZIa

A new medication means new questions: What are the benefits? Will it interact with other prescriptions? It can be especially challenging for patients with a chronic illness who sometimes need to juggle dozens of medications. Pharmacists like Rachel Wedemeyer, PharmD, RPH, from our Medication Therapy Management program help patients understand their prescriptions, ensure they’re on the most appropriate regimen, and find ways to improve treatment.
Every day, our care teams inspire us with their compassion and dedication. They’re changing – and saving – lives, one appointment at a time. That’s why we’re thrilled to congratulate the 300+ M Health Fairview physicians named 2023 Top Doctors by Minnesota Monthly, more than any other health system statewide. We're thrilled to announce the grand opening of Health Commons East, a drop-in health and wellness center at Conway Community Center in St. Paul. In collaboration with The Sanneh Foundation, Augsburg University, and the East Side Health and Well-Being Collaborative, M Health Fairview celebrated this momentous occasion with our incredible community partners and elected officials. Health Commons is more than a concept; it's a movement to erase healthcare barriers. By addressing issues like insurance, cost, transportation, and language challenges, this collaborative model has already transformed lives. Our Minneapolis locations have seen over 4,600 visits in 2022 alone, and our annual impact survey showed that over 90% of visitors are making positive lifestyle changes through Health Commons programming, including healthier habits and increased social connections. We're here to foster well-being, break barriers, and promote healthier lives. This is a journey of togetherness, and we're excited to be part of it.
