As one of Minnesota’s largest employers, we are committed to supporting our veterans, active-duty service members, and their families across the state. Which is why we are proud to announce we’ve been approved to become a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon organization. Beyond the Yellow Ribbon is a comprehensive program connecting service members and their families with community support, resources, training, and services. Our Veterans Allies & Advocates Employee Resource Group and Beyond the Yellow Ribbon steering committee have worked hard for several years to earn this distinction. “The grit and determination displayed by so many involved in getting us to this place is evidence of true ‘Esprit de Corps’,” said John Marshall, contracting director for Fairview Pharmacy Services and leader of our Veterans Allies & Advocates employee resource group. “The steadfast support and hundreds of hours by VAA members, leadership, and employees throughout the organization has been the driving force that has gotten us to where we are today.” Congratulations to the teams and leaders who made this possible.
Minnesota is one of the healthiest states in the nation – with some of the nation’s worst health disparities. To help address those health inequities, Taj Mustapha, MD, chief equity strategy officer, and Maria Medina, system director of equity initiatives from our health system are joining nearly 20 others on Minnesota Department of Health’s Equitable Health Care Task Force. Established earlier this year, the task force will recommend changes in healthcare practices and health insurance regulations, while identifying strategies to help all Minnesotans – regardless of race, culture, age, gender identity, or other factors – get better access to needed care. 385 turkeys, 200 chickens, 100 hams, and more than 1,000 pounds of sides. That was the menu for Fairview’s annual Harvest at the Hub in St. Paul. On Tuesday, more than 400 community members gathered for a free meal served at the event. Many also attended a health resource fair with free flu shots, blood pressure tests, and other services. The event aims to ensure that everyone in the community – no matter their housing, health, or financial status – can enjoy a nutritious meal and celebrate the season with joy and abundance. Thank you to our partners who helped make this possible, including The Sanneh Foundation, Minnesota Community Care, and Cub Foods.
Sharonne Dolecheck, RN, BSN, knew she wanted to become a nurse after watching nurses provide compassionate home hospice care for her aunt. “I knew I wanted to be a part of this dedicated and caring community,” Sharonne said. For her flexible skill set and limitless empathy, she was recently honored with a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This honor recognizes the skillful dedication our nurses bring to patient care every day. Sharonne was nominated by a patient who was deeply grateful for Sharonne’s care and unwavering support. “Knowing that my patients appreciate my work is incredibly fulfilling. It’s a reminder that nursing is not just a job but a calling,” she said. Help us congratulate Sharonne and thank her for the empathy she brings to her work every day. 💓
On Saturday, we helped 20 people take charge of their health during our lung cancer awareness screening event held in partnership with Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota at M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital. People with risk factors for lung cancer based on family history or previous tobacco use were identified and invited to take this potentially life-saving step for their future. “We opened up our CT scanner on a Saturday and invited people to come and complete their scans that day - they were thankful to have a chance to get this test done without having to miss work!” said Abbie Begnaud, MD, an interventional pulmonologist and associate professor with University of Minnesota Medical School. We’re grateful to everyone who helped put early detection and awareness center stage. #LungCancerScreening | #LungCancer
