On National Intern Day, we’re grateful to all of our interns, and we’re proud to spotlight former interns like Project Manager and Geotechnical Service Line Lead Liana Serrano, PE, who began her career at Kleinfelder more than 20 years ago. “I hired on with Kleinfelder kind of by accident,” she said. “I was doing a report on the geology of my hometown and I found a website that listed companies that employed geologists in Pleasanton, California.” After sending an email indicating that she was a student looking for a summer internship, she interviewed and was hired on working in the soils lab. “It was a great experience and I learned a lot,” she said. “As a geology student, I didn’t know where I wanted to go within geology, but by the end of that first summer interning with Kleinfelder, I knew I was going to work in geotech.” After that, she kept in touch with her Kleinfelder colleagues and worked during every winter, spring, and summer break while she pursued her degree, working in the soils lab and as a field technician, and within six months of graduating, she was running the lab that she started out in as an intern. From there, Liana pursued her master’s in geotechnical engineering, and she now serves as a geotechnical service line lead. “Internships are opportunities to try new things. I just happened to enjoy doing what I did in my first internship enough – and had opportunities to try several different things within that internship – to want to stay.”
