It was a perfect fall day when Legacy Emanuel nurse, Joe Tanner, went surfing on his day off. When he realized he'd been attacked by a shark while resting on his board, his training and instinct kicked in. Tanner taught others on the shore how to tie a tourniquet and he was taken to the hospital where he works. His actions that day earned him an award usually given to EMTs.
